I want to help you find something that truly ignites you!
What do you find that motivates you, or inspires you? There are some common ways we can get, stay, or find motivation. Much of it includes others. If you’re naturally shy or an introvert (like me on both accounts), involving others in your fitness and activities may seem quite uncomfortable, but it’s essential and here two simple reasons why. One – You will always, always, always learn more and faster from a group than by yourself. And Two – If you are like me (introvert and shy) this will help you overcome much of that. It did for me.
Let’s look at first some cut and dry steps; then we’ll look just a little deeper at what I like to call life changing factors.
1 – Join with Like Minded
Joining in with other like minded groups will help keep your focus, challenge you to hit targets and reach goals.
Don’t be the lone wolf!
You are far less likely to get motivated and stay motivated without the challenge and motivation of others.
Have like minded friends? Make a pact, get fit together.
Join a class! Whether you have built-in fitness friends or not, join a class. It will pit you with others to motivate you and help you meet your goals. Class structure, techniques, routines and more will all help you meet and exceed your goals mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Local gyms or YMCA offer many group classes in anything from Spinning to Pilates to you name it! Find one you like and join!
Look to your local Parks and Recreations department for free or low cost groups and classes. Parks and Recreation is not just for leisure, play or hiking. You can find options for Martial arts, Dance, Swimming and many others.
Junior College is another great resource for fitness classes and groups! Classes can be found and very reasonable rates ranging from swimming, running, martial arts and many more.
2- Leverage Online Groups and Sites
Many online resources are out there to help you stay fit and motivated to reach your goals or exceed them.
Yes, seriously you can do 100 pushups. I did and I started out only able to do 10 at a time. The key is to stay focused and finish no matter how long you take.
3 – There’s an App for that!
We’ve all heard it before, there’s an app for that! Silliness aside, fitness apps are getting better and more integrated all the time. Fitness tracking devices like FitBit are also great.
Now let’s go deeper. Let’s try to find some passion triggers. If you work with or get to work with a personal trainer, they will inevitably get you to work through and define what motivates you. Next, they will help you set goals. You see for real life change, you simply gotta want it so bad that nothing will stop you. You have to find what ignites you.
Two BIG examples for me: First, I went through a very painful time in my life. It motivated me to make a very important decision to chose life, real life and become stronger to enjoy more of that life. Second, I began to search for and picture someone I admired for their talent, spiritual and family strength, and for physical strength. Luckily for me, it was no further than a long time friend. He and his wife have raised incredibly talented, wonderful kids, stayed true and strong in their faith, and he is the ultimate fit example. I’m talking Sylvester Stallone fit, arms that barely fit in his sleeves. So I look to that life changing event and my decision, then I look to an awe inspiring example. Without that deep motivation, I could not keep pushing when it gets tough.
For you; find something deep, passionate, and vastly important to grab onto and fuel your motivation and keep you focused. Then use some or all of the tips above.
